Abstract
The weathered zone is usually composed of unconsolidated soil, the seismic properties of which can be highly variable, especially in the vicinity of the earth's surface. The weathered zone and the free surface have a large influence on the generation and the recording of seismic energy, especially in horizontal seismic profiling where both, the source and the receivers are located near to or at the surface.
