Abstract
We consider the role of amplitude-variation-with-offset (AVO) information in the construction of full waveform inversion (FWI) updates from precritical seismic reflection data. We invoke a mixed continuous-discrete formulation of FWI, which clearly exposes issues such as parameter cross-talk, and which admits a range of approximate update forms, including a gradient-based update and what we refer to as a parameter-type update. Within this framework, three criticisms of gradient-based updates for precritical reflection data are arrived at with an analytic calculation; exposure to cross-talk is the chief of these. The use of the elements retained in the parameter-type approximate is pointed to as addressing all of these criticisms, and amounting to a generalization of linearized AVO inversion within FWI.
