Abstract

Many methods for seismic investigations require large aperture seismic data acquisition schemes, especially when investigating deep targets. Within the marine environment two-ship methods have often been used to collect large offset data. Since this technique is rather costly and has several shortcomings, an alternative method is to deploy ocean bottom recorders. However, only a few suitable instruments exist, and the data capacity with existing OBS-technology is limited. Since new high capacity storage devices suitable for OBS have been developed during the past years, we decided to design an OBS that is equally well suited for exploration demands as for seismological and other investigations.
