Abstract

The most common wave equation migration methods are based on the paraxial approximation where one-way wave equations describe downward propagating waves (Claerbout, 1970, Kjartansson, 1979). One-way wave equations are obtained by seeking a polynomial or rational approximation to the dispersion relation. Here, we present a seismic migration technique with an one-way wave system which is obtained from the characteristic analysis of the acoustic wave system. This one-way wave system describes accurately waves propagating at angles up to 80°. A new set of absorbing boundary conditions based on one-way wave systems has also been constructed.
