Abstract
More than 200 exploration Wells have been drilled in the Northern North Sea (60°-62°N), and about 50% of the total acreage has been awarded. In a mature oil province new discoveries (as opposed to appraisals) will be based on new play concepts, probably within alternative or multiple stratigraphic levels. In the Northern North Sea this includes deep Middle Jurassic reservoirs buried to more than 4 km and Upper Jurassic to Tertiary reservoirs where the sand distribution and quality is just beginning to be understood. Since the economic potential is small compared to the risk of the prospects it is very important to have an updated geological model of high quality.
