Abstract
The upstream petroleum industry makes extensive use of Information Systems and Technology for data processing, modelling and analysis. In meeting its objectives, of identifying and producing petroleum reserves at lowest possible cost and maximum rates of recovery, it combines a diverse range of technical disciplines including both the geosciences and engineering. Until recently the approach within the industry has been to acquire and develop computing applications to meet the needs of the different technical areas and this had lead to the proliferation of high performance systems which are poorly integrated.
