Abstract
Reservoir engineers are likely to be familiar with the basic theory of effective permeability (Keff) for layered media - the harmonic mean, kh, for uniform flow across layers and the arithmetic mean, ka, for uniform flow along layers (Marsily, 1986, p81). Indeed, for uniform flow in any permeability field, the effective permeability always lies between kh and ka (Matheron, 1967). Also well established, are the formulae for Keff in 2D and 3D fields with random, log-normally distributed permeability (Gutjahr et al., 1978).
