Abstract

Porous carbonate (Zechstein deposits) have been the target of Intense hydrocarbon exploration In Southern Jylland, Denmark. 11 wells have been drilled since 1952 and a total of more than 2000 km of seismic data have been acquired by various contractors. Severel oil shows have been recorded, but no commercial production has commenced. Present Interpretations of the Zechstein stratigraphy are based mostly on well data (e.g. Clark and Tellbacka, 1980 ; Stommerik and Frykman , 1989). This paper describes an integrated approach, where seismic modelling is used as an aid to the seismic stratigraphical interpretation of the Zechstein deposits with emphasis on porous carbonate. By 1D seismic modelling the well data is consistently correlated with the seismic data. From a detailed investigation of the physical parameters of each Zechstein facies and the 1D modelling results, unique 2D acoustic Impedance models are derived. Synthetic seismic data is generated from these models to evaluate the seismic reflection pattern. This integrated approach makes it possible to define and Interpret composite seismic reflection patterns that are diagnostic especially of carbonates and variation in carbonate porosity.
