Velocity analysis for prestack depth migration: Examples using synthetic and real subsalt data

In seismic prospecting under salt, poststack depth migration often provides unsatisfactory results. A common contributor to the problem is the occurrence of large lateral velocity variation associated with salt (high velocity) of nonuniform thickness encased in sediments (lower velocity).
