Abstract
Interpreters rarely consider the flatness of common image gathers when assessing uncertainties associated with stacked migrated seismic images. To address this we have developed a seismic velocity confidence (SVC) attribute that measures the flatness of common image gathers (CIGs) and enables interpreters to systematically identify areas of less reliable seismic imaging and amplitudes. The SVC is calculated by cross-correlating each trace in a CIG with its lower offset/angle neighbour. Computational parallelisation was needed to make the calculation efficient for large 3D seismic datasets (10000 km2). An example of the SVC is shown where CIG flatness consistently correlated with fault shadows. We have found that because the SVC can easily be related to geological features and can be easily integrated within interpretation workflows.
