Abstract
Resources had become more challenging to find and exploit through years, as potential areas are located in deep water and complex subsurface environment. Advanced imaging methods are needed. The application of Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) showing some exciting results, though application on real dataset and deep structures are still very challenging. In paper, we demonstrate a successful imaging of a large quantity of gas between 3–7 km depth in Sumatra forearc basin through the use of Elastic FWI. We first apply traveltime tomography to find an accurate background velocity model, and then apply FWI to far offset data. A higher resolution of shallow subsurface is achieved by inverting near offset reflection data, including imaging of a bottom simulating reflector (BSR) above the low velocity zone.
