Abstract

Summary

Broadband imaging is now popular both for improved geological interpretation and providing a robust starting point for seismic inversion. In the marine environment the compensation of ghost effects from free-surface interactions is one of the main challenges in the production of such images. Here we present methods for ghost compensation in the Kirchhoff and beam ray-based migration algorithms. We exploit the fact that ray directions at the surface can be extracted in the migration directly and hence used in the ghost compensation operator. Following this scheme we can generate a subsequent band-limited impedance image from the ghost compensated data through a modified imaging condition. We describe the method and theory of the ghost compensation, and finish by showing results on synthetic and real data.
