Abstract

Summary

A subsurface image is often biased by the acquisition deficiencies, the so-called acquisition footprint. Often, this footprint cannot be predicted straight-forwardly, especially when the subsurface structures are complex. The method of focal beam analysis enables a proper evaluation of the influence of the acquisition geometry, overburden, and the migration. This method is in accordance with wave theory, and therefore it enables a quantitative analysis of image quality at the target. So far, this method makes use of the primaries-only wavefield. However, the subsurface is not only illuminated by the primary source wavefield but also by the secondary source wavefield as generated by surface-related as well as internal multiples. We extended the focal beam theory such that it makes use of all multiply scattered waves.
