Abstract

A towed marine acquisition system delivers ghost-free data by using a time-and-depth blended source array (to address the source ghost) and a dual-sensor streamer (to address the receiver ghost). Eliminating the ghosts via separating the up-going and down-going wavefields yields broadband data with improved structural resolution, greater signal penetration, improved interpretability, and robust inversion results. The wavefield separation process, applied right at the start of the processing sequence, opens up a new realm of processing and interpretive applications with significant benefits for signal processing and imaging. Enhanced applications that are enabled via the wavefield separation process include noise attenuation, demultiple, and imaging using multiples. The step-change in the resolution and interpretability of ghost-free broadband data promises to change the way the oil & gas exploration industry views the traditional seismic life-cycle.
