In seismic data processing one of the challenges is to find a good mute for linear events like airwaves, ground rolls and direct arrivals prior to the stages like deconvloution. In this paper, the application of a fuzzy clustering algorithm based on statistical maximum likelihood estimator in finding the wanted signals in a synthetic shot gather is presented. The algorithm successfully found the signal parts out of unwanted linear and random noise. The added value of the method is in its adaptive accept/region area which can be defined for every shot gather independently.
