Paper presents the state-of-the-art in geotechnical approach to the problem of soil seismic liquefaction evaluation in the practice of site investigations. Generally used methods, including cone penetration test (CPT), standard penetration test (SPT), dynamic sounding and seismic sounding as well as laboratory dynamic tests (cyclic triaxial, cyclic simple shear, cyclic torsional shear and others), are described. Basing on the published data and on the wide practical experience of the authors a new classification for identification of potentially liquefiable soils is developed.
