Abstract

A silisiclastic porosity compaction relationship has been derived for sedimentary basins, where shale volume contents (Vshale) from well logs are used as input. The relationship has been derived from simplified assumptions about stress-paths and rock compressibilities, in combinations with a published relation between mean grain size an sea-floor porosity and a relation between mean grain size content and clay content. The porosity-depth relationship has been tested on well data. Two input parameters may be optimized and result in a narrow range of low misfit values between observed and measured porosities.
