Abstract

We suggest using rock physics based parameterization designed for granular media for surface wave inversion to estimate effective shear modulus of unconsolidated sediments at very low effective stress. The result is a very stable inversion scheme that yields a continuous profile of shear modulus vs. depth. We present a Bayesian approach to the surface wave inversion in granular media and demonstrate this approach on both a synthetic example and on a Multi Channel Analysis of Surface wave (MASW) experiment on a thick sand dune. We find that in the sand dune observed shear profile deviate from classical effective media approximation of Hertzian contact laws expected from theory.
