Abstract

Siccar Point is one of over 4000 Sites of Special Scientific Interests (SSSIs) in Britain. It is also an area of land which Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) considers to be unique for its geology. It is a well-known site for amateurs and professional geologists who come to visit this geologically famous location from all over the world. This locality provides an overview of gently deeping Upper Old Red Sandstone deposits overlying almost vertical Silurian beds and moreover the most remarkable feature of the location – Hutton's unconformity. The objective of the project at Siccar Point, has been to build a three-dimensional model of the unconformity surface and furthermore investigate the origin of the Devonian sediments overlying the unconformity. The three-dimensional model displays and preserves the complex geometry of the Hutton’s unconformity in a unique way. The terrestrial scanning LiDAR technology applied in this study allowed mapping the surface and the boundaries between the sedimentary units overlying the unconformity at Siccar Point. Subsequent 3D geological model can be used for interpretation, visualizing and education.
