Abstract

Along the Mures Valley, near Geoagiu, there are many occurrences of smaller or larger travertine deposits. Their genesis is controlled by the presence of marbles (Rapolt Formation) and by the tectonic fractures associated to the Mures Valley. Quaternary travertine deposits from Carpinis and Geoagiu quarries have been investigated from petrografic, geochemical and sedimentological point of view for a possible correlation between the post volcanic activity, climatic changes and travertine formation. The fluid composition from which the travertine precipitated show a high degree of mineralization, mainly carbonates with a low concentration of metallic elements, according to the geochemical results and also to the different microfacies identified in this formation.
