Improved Subsurface Imaging in Complex Volcanic Setting by Using Beamlet-decomposition-based Image Enhancement Methods

Abstract
A geological environment characterized by complex volcanic features can provide one of the most significant challenges for velocity model building and depth imaging of seismic reflection data. New acquisition of long offset, broadband data can provide a significant uplift over heritage datasets in this type of environment, but especially in the current industry situation, with falling oil prices and rising costs, it should not be forgotten that recent developments in data-processing and imaging technology can also add significant value to existing datasets. The reprocessing of existing datasets with new techniques can provide new insights including improved resolution, signal-to-noise, amplitude reliability and image accuracy
In this paper, we discuss a Northern North Sea case study demonstrating the advantages of using beamlet-decomposition-based image enhancement techniques during velocity model building and as a tool for improving the interpretability of the final image.
