Abstract

Summary

We developed an algorithm which can locate microseismic events efficiently. The algorithm is divided by two parts. The first part is to estimate the velocity model. Although the accurate velocity model is required for the microseismic event location, it takes a lot of time and cost to obtain the correct velocity model. So we assume a linearly increasing velocity model and invert the gradient component of that model using a simple nonlinear inverse problem. The nonlinear inverse problem is simply a root-finding problem and is solved by iterative Newton-Raphson method. The second part is to estimate microseismic event location. We can estimate event location by the Gauss-newton method using the inverted velocity model. The algorithm can provide a reasonable result in a very short time and with simple procedures. Therefore the proposed algorithm is suitable for the application of field data.
