Abstract

Summary

Wave attenuation is an important physical property of hydrate-bearing sediments that is rarely taken into account in site characterization with seismic data. Mass transport deposits (MTDs) show similar seismic reflection characteristics to gas hydrate-bearing sediments (GHBS) such as the bottom-simulating reflector (BSR). In this paper, the seismic quality factor (Q) is estimated from the peak frequency method in the southern area of South China Sea (SCS). According to the comparison of the inferred BSR and MTD, we can distinguish the BSR and MTD, and infer the presence of gas hydrate, which suggest the zone of gas hydrate show low Q indicating that the presence of hydrate increases seismic attenuation.
