Abstract

Summary

Most methods to separate specular reflections and diffractions require changes inside a migration algorithm or workflow steps before migration. We introduce a workflow that achieves this separation after the depth migration process. This workflow can be applied to any 3D depth migrated volume.

This process consists of three stages. First, a matching pursuit decomposition to remove specular reflection energy. Second, creation of directional image partition gathers using a carefully designed 3D filter bank. Third, a diffraction enhancement weight based on coherency in the gathers.

We illustrate this process on field data examples from Canada.
