Abstract

Summary

When evaluating new prospects and planning new exploration or appraisal wells, time-depth conversion of seismic horizons is a major source of uncertainties. This paper describes a case study in the Southern North Sea, where the interpretation from three adjacent (partially overlapping) seismic surveys is combined into consistent single depth maps of key horizons after reconciling PreSDM and regional well velocities using geostatistics. The focus has been set on velocity variations in the Chalk, most likely related to the burial history. The case study demonstrates the benefit of combining high quality PreSDM velocities in a restricted area with a detailed V0-k analysis over a wider area in order to improve the overall time-depth conversion. The resulting depth maps of deeper horizons have supported the exploration allowing a much more accurate spill point analysis.
