Abstract

Two of the key challenges for velocity model building in the North Sea are a heterogeneous overburden (for example, the presence of fluvial and sub-glacial channels) and the presence of strong velocity contrasts (most often introduced by a chalk layer). Two model building techniques have been developed in recent years which address these challenges. Full-waveform inversion (FWI) has been shown to be highly effective in resolving overburden heterogeneity and multilayer tomography allows us to preserve sharp contrasts in our velocity models. Herein, we show how the combination of these two techniques provides an effective and efficient model building workflow for the North Sea environment
