Abstract
Source mechanism reconstruction is one of the key features in reservoir characterization. We show that moment tensors in anisotropic media can have significant non double-couple (DC) components. We compare these moment tensors, which describe the stress in the source, with their corresponding potency tensors, which reflect the strain in the source. The potency tensors exhibit much smaller degrees of non double-couple components. Since both tensors describe the same kinematics, these non DC- components are an artifact of the anisotropy of the source medium.
In practice we should therefore rather analyze the potency tensor as it is not influenced by the elastic medium and carries only the information of the kinematic rupture.
