Abstract

Summary

We extend a match-filter Q-estimation approach previously proposed to estimate attenuated traveltimes from depth-migrated gathers. These depth-domain attenuated traveltimes can then be used within a dedicated Q tomography scheme to reconstruct 3D Q models of the subsurface. Alternatively, we show that, in environments of moderate structural complexity, the stability and quality of this attribute enables consideration of direct Q-compensation workflows, offering attractive quality/cost trade-offs in areas suffering from spatially variant attenuation issues.
