Abstract

Summary

The basis of many common AVO/AVA analysis and inversion workflows, including AVO Quality Control steps (QCs), has changed relatively little in recent years. However, the nature of seismic data has changed significantly, shifting from limited bandwidth “conventional” data towards increasingly broad-bandwidth data with consistent signal over many octaves. The broader bandwidth and additional low frequency content available in modern data creates new opportunities but also introduces new challenges. Therefore it is important to ensure that the practical application of AVO QCs is appropriate for the new challenges.

This paper addresses: why it is both more important and challenging to provide reliable AVO QCs for broader bandwidth seismic data; the application and limitations of some existing QCs; and, some new ways to QC data by using the frequency domain.

The difficulty in broadband data QC is the diverse range of signal over many octaves, which has varying properties (such as signal-to-noise ratio). Legacy “conventional” data tend to be dominated by amplitudes in a relatively narrow frequency band with therefore less variation. For broader bandwidths, unless frequency-dependent QCs are carried out, data issues may be degrading certain frequencies bands and impacting the quality of the attributes and interpretation.
