Abstract
In complex foothills of Papua New Guinea, main prospective reservoirs are constituted by carbonate platforms difficult to delineate, even with high quality 2D seismic data. We propose a new and original approach for de-risking the structural interpretation by picking seismic reflections directly on shot points and therefore extracting the most significant events. Most reflectors are illuminated only by a limited range of shots. This new type of seismic interpretation is further validated by fully elastic modeling to ensure that no unwanted wave mode (converted wave or multiple) has been selected. The picking provides noise free input data to the migration algorithm and produce a clearer structural image that reveals deeper reflectors.
