Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio are very important elastic parameters for reservoir characterization and sweet spot prediction via rock brittleness in unconventional shale gas exploration and development. Here, we present a direct three-parameter inversion method for Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and density by using the exact Zoeppritz equations, based on the assumption of isotropy. Accuracy analysis of the derived Zoeppritz expression by Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ration and density is conducted via an AVO curve comparison. Finally, a robust nonlinear AVA inversion strategy is adopted by utilizing an iteratively regularizing Levenberg-Marquardt (IRLM) algorithm, which assures high accuracy inverted parameters of Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and density. The presented direct inversion method is tested and verified by using both synthetic data and real field seismic data, which demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed method.
