Abstract
Frequency-dependent amplitude variation with offset (FAVO) inversion is regarded as a potential hydrocarbon identification technique. However, conventional FAVO inversions are often based on the Zoeppritz approximation and have many problems. Generalized Propagator Matrix (GPM) forward modelling is derived from the 1-D wave equation, can simulate multi-layered models accurately, and calculates reflection coefficients in the frequency domain. It is suitable for FAVO analysis. In this abstract, we propose a new FAVO inversion based on the GPM (FAVO-GPM) to overcome the existing problems of traditional FAVO inversion (based on Zoeppritz approximations). An application of the proposed method to real seismic data indicates that it is effective for identifying hydrocarbons.
