Abstract

Summary

Whilst significant engineering advancements in seabed acquisition technology have been made in recent years, the efficiency and cost of seabed acquisition solutions still inhibit adopting the technique beyond established fields with critical development objectives. In this study, we investigate potential strategies to acquire a full-azimuth data set in the North Sea in the context of exploration or near-field development. We compared several towed-streamer circular shooting designs with a selection of ocean-bottom node designs and proposed a ranking of the results. Initially evaluated based on offset and azimuth distribution, we also evaluated the options using 3D illumination analysis on data from a field in the Norwegian North Sea. The study shows that the towed-streamer circular shooting technique can be used to provide similar or improved illumination when compared to sparse seabed designs and can be acquired in a more efficient time frame.
