Abstract

Summary

Digital Elevation Models(DEMs) are considered as the true representation of the earth surface. But the selection of a specific resolution DEM for a particular study is challenging. This study is centered to determine whether the parameters such as longitudinal profile and hypsometric curve depend on the resolution of the DEM. For the above mentioned study two DEMs of 30m and 90m resolution are taken of Markanda River basin which is a highly sensitive zone in the Himalayas. The study is carried out using ArcGIS 10.1 and TecDEM, a MATLAB extension. The study area was delineated in GIS environment. Upon analysis in TecDEM, it was observed that the longitudinal profile depends on the DEMs resolution whereas the hypsometric curve does not. So, a better quality DEM must be used in determining the profile. Not doing so may lead to the misinterpretation of important structural elements. The hypsometric curve being a plot of the ratio of difference in area and height elements doesn’t show dependence on resolution.
