Abstract

Summary

Caves researching without outside entry must be addressed by indirect techniques as geophysical methods. Among them, those based on gravity methods are the most reliable in cave detection due to the density contrasts between cavity and host rock. Determining caves morphology in a 3D way is difficult and requires combination with other geophysical methods. To avoid misinterpretations, we present a code to invert residual of gravity data in order to obtain 3D morphologies of caves. This code divides the semispace under the study area into regular blocks and it tries to adjust the anomaly in an iterative process. Two densities were used and the program calculates the cave morphology from a starting point. The case of study is focused on the Zé de Braga’s cave, located in Santo Antonio range. This cavity has a form of L-shape and well-known position and dimension. Through the calculated residual anomaly map, we show the preliminary result calculated with the developed code. The calculated cave has a morphology that is very close to the real one, and it matches with the position of the Zé de Braga’s cave.
