Abstract

Summary

We present a PDE constrained joint inversion scheme for surface waves in which we iteratively reconstructs the wave field and then estimate the phase velocity. Our model for surface waves is based on the dispersive Helmholtz equation to model the far-field behavior of single mode dispersive surface waves. We support our algorithm with an example using a synthetic elastic shot gather synthesized in a layer over half space model with a step function. Our algorithm reconstructs an approximate wavefield (satisfying the scalar wave equation) and the retrieved phase velocity resembles the structure. We verify the final retrieved dispersion model using a frequency-wavenumber analysis of the elastic wavefields generated in equivalent layer over half space models.
