Abstract

Summary

In recent years, the share of unconventional reserves in global oil production is growing, which leads to increasing number of efficient methods for searching, exploring and developing unconventional resources. The study of Bazhenov Formation deposits in Western Siberia has a high priority among unconventional reservoirs. The nature of reservoirs wettability is one of the important factors affecting the residual saturation and filtration properties of the rock. However, many petrophysical studies show that standard laboratory methods for wettability determination are not applicable for Bazhenov Formation. In the framework of this research, fluid saturation and wettability of rocks of Bazhenov Formation were analyzed using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and by calculation of the wetting angle of the rock surface. The calculation of the wetting angle provided a primary assessment of the rock wettability and enabled defining the correlation between the wetting angle and the organic carbon content (TOC), which is relevant for Bazhenov Formation rocks. The lithological description of thin sections was used to identify and separate groups with a similar nature of wettability and distribution of organic matter. For integral characterization of the core samples wettability, NMR relaxometry was applied.
