Abstract
We present a stochastic 1D basin modelling project which proved to be a key de-risking tool in the frontier area of Peniche Basin, offshore Portugal by identifying areas with a high charge / timing risk and determining the conditions for a successful prospect charge. This technique is useful to identify the complete range in results generated and the likelihood of hydrocarbon generation in specific intervals and from specific source intervals. Two trends in maturity can be identified for: 1) Source intervals within the pre-cursor basin (Jurassic), and 2) Those within the passive fill (Cenomanian - Turonian source interval and a source rock located at the base of the passive fill). Heat generated by post-rift burial is insufficient for any late hydrocarbon generation from Jurassic source rocks resulting in a ‘frozen’ maturity. Generation is relatively early and is therefore favourable to an early formed trap. Maturity for a younger source rock within the passive fill section is only generated by an increase in temperature related to burial. The amount of Tertiary fill is the most important factor in screening for late charge potential in the model described.
