We developed, built, and field tested a five-component land seismic sensor whose data facilitates attenuation of spatially aliased ground roll. The sensor records the three components of particle motion and the two vertical gradients of the horizontal wavefields that, at the free surface, are equal to the horizontal gradients of the vertical wavefield. The gradient measurements provide an estimate of the ground roll on the vertical component and can be used to attenuate the spatially aliased part of the ground roll using phase-corrected adaptive subtraction. We discuss the design principles of the sensor and show data from field tests that validate the gradient wavefield recordings. A 2D stack from data acquired at 25-m source and receiver intervals and processed using the gradient data is of comparable quality to a stack generated from data acquired by a conventional six-element geophone array using the same processing sequence (bar the initial gradient processing step).
