Abstract

Summary

Seismic wave attenuation, typically quantified by Q, is a notoriously challenging problem in seismic imaging and interpretation with poor signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) and poor resolution. To produce a reliable Q model, we propose a Q tomography method which is based on ray-tracing theory applied on migrated images. To measure Q on the migrated images, we adopt the extended spectral ratio method developed by . This new extended spectral ratio method yields the wavenumber-dependent common factors instead of frequency-dependent factors which can be implemented by ray-tracing methods directly. Numerical tests demonstrate the feasibility of this Q estimation method and lead to a noticeable improvement in the image quality.
