Abstract

Summary

The Egersund Basin is situated in the North Sea, on the north-eastern flank of Central Graben. The current understanding of the Late Jurassic / Early Cretaceous interval is that the Late Jurassic succession is sourced from east-southeast, while the Early Cretaceous strata is sourced from north-northeast. In addition, four parasequences have been defined in the Middle to Upper Jurassic succession. The Late Jurassic / Early Cretaceous interval has not undergone a full analysis. Consequently, the aim of this study is to build a further understanding of the processes that controls the sequence development through time by applying a genetic sequence stratigraphic framework to the 3D seismic. Preliminary observations indicate at least two source areas for the Late Jurassic and one for the Early Cretaceous strata. Six complete and one incomplete sequence were interpreted for the interval of interest. The sedimentation rate and accommodation generation seems to decreases from the Late Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous period. In addition, preliminary seismic facies analysis indicate that the salt did not interfere with the deposition of the Late Jurassic sediments.
