Abstract
Marine CSEM data acquired in shallow water is affected by the so-called airwave, which has a masking effect on the subsurface response. While several methods for mitigating the airwave have been proposed, a rigorous analysis of the performance of these methods is lacking. We propose a method by which the performance of a large class of airwave mitigation methods can be analyzed. Our analysis shows the importance of taking uncertainty in the measurement of survey acquisistion parameters into account, and also highlights the role played by correlations between data points due to the acquisition parameter uncertainty. We apply our method to three different airwave mitigation strategies, up-down decomposition, frequency differencing and airwave bucking, and discuss the impact of the uncertainty of acquisition parameters on each method.
