Abstract

Summary

The development of geothermal energy is growing in some areas of the world very rapidly. However, it remains a small fraction of the renewable energy mix, especially when compared to wind and solar. One of the main reasons that hinder the expansion of geothermal projects is the high risk related to the understanding of the subsurface. To improve and accelerate geothermal development globally, a profound understanding of the geothermal system is fundamental. What are the key elements that are responsible for the development and distribution of permeable zones, and can we predict them?
