3d Ground Penetrating Radar for Non-Invasive Large-Scale Tank Investigation

Abstract
Noninvasive investigations are increasingly being used in engineering projects. The application of these investigative techniques can assist in important steps, such as in the maintenance phase of the structure safety conditions. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is an excellent non-destructive engineering research tool capable of assisting in the identification of various anomalies in a reinforced concrete structures or pavements. This work aims to evaluate the concrete reinforcement conditions of a large test tank with fitted windows on the front and right-side faces by conducting investigations using the GPR method. This tank has inner dimensions of 10.0m x 2.1m x 2.6m, which will be used to perform geotechnical tests. Through this technique it was possible to identify the positioning of the reinforcement inside the concrete walls of the tank, obtain the spacing, arrangement and depth of the embedded reinforcement, and map eventual void areas in the concrete without causing damage to the structure, helping the recovery and reinforcement works of the tank concrete structure. The interior of some structural elements, such as the floor slab around the tank and the reservoir concrete walls, were investigated. The data are presented in a 3D visualization model of the metal beams of the tank structure.
