Abstract

Summary

This study investigates the efficacy of the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) method for quality assessment in the marble quarrying industry. GPR surveys were conducted in both quarry benches and extracted marble blocks, utilizing systems with various centre frequency transducers. The processed GPR data are analysed and interpreted through a combination of 2D radagrams and 3D visualization techniques. The results indicate that GPR is a reliable and effective tool in identifying fractures and discontinuities in the marble rock mass. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that appropriate implementation of the GPR technology can significantly improve quarrying techniques, leading to an increased recovery ratio of high-quality marble and enhancement of the overall quarrying operations.
