Abstract
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) stands out as a well-established mitigation strategy with the potential to significantly curb the continuous release of CO2 into the atmosphere. Greece, like numerous other nations, is confronted with the urgent task of reducing its carbon footprint, particularly in terms of industrial emissions. This challenge is further underscored by the concentration of CO2 emitters in two distinct clusters: the Northern Cluster and the Central Cluster. However, Greece also boasts promising opportunities for CO2 storage, with the Prinos Complex emerging as the most mature candidate site for short to medium-term carbon storage. Taking these factors into consideration, several CCS development plans are anticipated to commence in the coming years presenting opportunities for both domestic and international CO2 transportation. In this work, we aim to present the current state of CO2 emissions in Greece, identify potential CO2 storage sites and introduce realistic CCS development plans.
