Abstract

Summary

A little over than a year between the beginning of 2022 and early 2023, Greece achieved a remarkable milestone by conducting seven seismic surveys, marking a substantial increase in exploration efforts within the region, following – and often exceeding – the strictest environmental protection standards. This milestone positions Greece as a compelling case study, distinguished by its unwavering commitment to international environmental standards, including ACCOBAMS-JNCC guidelines. In this work we present environmental insights from Greek offshore seismic operations, with an emphasis on marine life protection serving as a valuable guidance for the public, stakeholders, and industry practitioners, offering guidance on effective measures considered to mitigate sound-related environmental impacts and uphold responsible exploration practices.
