Abstract

Summary

The modelling of potential geological formations suitable to safely store CO2 is one of the current challenges in the aim of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies. In the aim of the PilotStrategy project, a detailed 3D facies modelling has been built covering a potential area located in the offshore of the Lusitanian Basin, in Portugal.

The current work presents the learnings of 3D facies modelling resulting from the analysis of preliminary outputs obtained by applying Sequential Indicator Simulation (SIS) and Truncated Gaussian Simulation (TGS). One major constrain of the facies modelling is the limited data availability and quality in this area. Despite its large size, there are only 4 wells located inside the area of the model, several 2D seismic lines and part of a 3D seismic volume. This work provides a valuable understanding of the progress achieved so far for 3D geological modelling of a potential offshore CO2 storage site, performed for the first time for a Portuguese case study.
