Abstract
Web mapping allows historical and cultural heritage objects to be placed within their geographical context. This helps researchers and viewers better understand the physical relationships between different objects, sites, and landmarks. Two main methods of web-based mapping of historical and cultural heritage objects have been considered for the purpose of their research and documentation. The first method is based on using existing free geoportals to map vector objects of historical and cultural heritage with attribute data for each of them. Two examples of creating online GIS (Geographic Information System) for historical and cultural heritage objects are provided for this method: one for the city of Cherkasy and the other for Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Two types of vector data were employed: point-based and polygonal. The second method involves creating an online GIS from scratch by creating interconnected HTML pages with interactive embedded maps implemented through hyperlinks. An example of using this method is illustrated through the methodology of creating an online GIS for Polish burials at the Baikove Cemetery in Kyiv.
