Abstract

Summary

A series of numerical experiments with various types of longitudinal profiles of the Carpathian rivers was carried out using a highly specialized software module. Longitudinal profiles of the bottoms of large rivers of the Ukrainian Carpathians were constructed and analyzed, such as Opir, Sukil, Mizunka, Svicha, Limnytsia, Bystrytsia-Nadvirnyanska, Prut, Latorytsia, Borzhava, Rika, Tereblya, Teresva, and Tysa. The parameters of the steepness of the slopes and the speed of water flowing down them were taken into account in the research. The simulation of the current velocity was carried out in an interactive mode. The potential capacity for erosion begins on sections with a slope of 20–30% at a current speed of 1.7 m/s, and on sections with a slope of 3–10% it occurs at a speed of 1.8 m/s was determined. Qualitative pictures of the nature of morphodynamic processes on different segments of longitudinal river profiles were obtained. Interactive longitudinal river profiles were built on space images in Google Earth to match the data of the author’s module. The processes of deep erosion and removal of sediments prevail in the upper steep sections of the profiles (first segment). Transport of solid material is widespread on the most concave parts of the profiles (second segment). Accumulation of deposits prevails in the third-fourth segments of longitudinal profiles. It is more, the stronger the erosion in the upper areas. Accumulation is greater in the lower sections of the profile, where the curve is close to the horizontal (3–10°), than in sections with a steepness of 30–45°. The developed model partially explains the different erosive and accumulative activity of mountain rivers and can be used to forecast their development, create effective measures on those rivers where the intensity of erosion and accumulation is higher.
